Only a few years after its start-up, iSAM delivered its first complete level I and HMI for a slab caster based on the then brand-new Siemens S5 and Coros LSB. Since then, many applications went on stream supported by our know how, amongst them the first automatic start of casting, control and visualisation of a resonance mould, a break-out prevention system for carbon steels and peritectic grades as well as a couple of implementations of mould level control. The first system already included the dual automatic mould level control (for Bertold and NKK) as well as dynamic spray cooling.

The automation package for the optimisation of continuous casting processes is characterised by overall engineering, planning, production and installation of measuring amplifiers. With all the caster projects, iSAM always relies on joint compilation of control algorithms and design of open and closed-loop control software using HLL and IEC 1131.

Automating continuous casting lines is essential for maintaining a trouble-free process chain from the upstream BOF shop down to the hot rolling mill. Break-out prevention is a valuable tool positively affecting casting performance and production yield. A sophisticated mould level control is indispensable in creating a steel product of high and constant quality, even when casting advanced steel grades.
